Why is My Refrigerator Not Cooling?

When a refrigerator has lost its cold anymore, it’s time to determine what the issue is. A lot of times it’s something as simple as a good coil cleaning behind the appliance. But, with these modern refrigerators, they’re manufactured with various sensors as well.

Before we investigate further, we inspect the most typical and common causes for this problem. Here are some of the issues that we have determined can lead to a refrigerator not cooling:

Is the cord plugged into an electrical outlet? This may seem like it’s a odd question, but we have been hired for jobs that this was the reason for the issue. For some reason, the refrigerator was not plugged in. it’s possible a kid did it, or an electrician while doing a project. Whatever the reason may be, make sure it’s plugged in.

Check the thermostat inside. This is a very typical problem for customers with small children in their home. After all, kids love dials and buttons and so, without understanding they’re doing something bad, they mess with them. So, check that the thermostat setting isn’t the cause of the warm fridge.

Refrigerator Components to Troubleshoot?

Check that each of the vents in the freezer area are not blocked with boxes or food. This is common because bags of frozen vegetables get pushed in the back of the freezer. There might be food in the way back of a freezer that has long been forgotten about.

Check that the refrigerator’s condenser cooling fan is clean and clear of all debris. To do this, unplug the refrigerator and pull it out from the kitchen wall. The fan for several models is just at the bottom or in the back part of the freezer section. A lot of times, customers don’t think to clean this section of the appliance. But, it’s important to clean it. And, it fills up with fuzz and dust quickly, especially in houses that have dogs and cats. So, find a clean rag and clean the dust out of the coils and fan.

This is not a suggestion for refrigerators that have a rear coil system. Once all clean, plug it back into the wall and see if the fan moves.

The Freezer Unit is Cold but the Refrigerator Isn’t

There are many reasons for a refrigerator that won’t cool after these obvious ones to start to take a look at if the freezer is cold but your fridge isn’t. The evaporator coils have frost on them. This occurs when there is a failure in the defrost system. Or when the automatic defrost experiences a problem. The evaporator fan motor can be another reason.

Every refrigerator has a pair of evaporator coils. These coils are what cool and then the fan moves the cold air around inside the unit. The damper control assembly is not working the right way. The temperature control board provides the electricity to the fan and compressor, this probably is not the problem but it’s worth mentioning.

And, the thermistor could be malfunctioning, which is a tiny sensor within the unit that displays the temperature. Having one of our technicians inspect it is the best solution but these are some of the most typical issues.
